Understanding CBD Milligram Strength

Understanding CBD Milligram Strengths on Another Level

When you start a new CBD product routine, it can feel overwhelming when you see just how many options you have. Cannabidiol (CBD) is such a popular ingredient that we can feel intimidated when it comes to zeroing in on the best products.

One of the most critical things to look for in a CBD formula is the right milligram strength. All hemp-based products, aside from flower, come in a generous variety of milligram strengths. This tells us how potent the product is, because it indicates how many milligrams of cannabinoids exist in the product.

Here are some tips when it comes to understanding which milligram strength may be appropriate for your needs. We’ll also cover what are considered to be standard milligram strengths according to each type of CBD product you can find.

Factors That Play a Role in Selecting a Milligram Strength

If you want to have a successful experience with CBD, choosing the right milligram strength is crucial. While hemp is nontoxic and not associated with serious side effects:

  • Taking too much can still make you feel a bit sleepy.
  • Taking too low of a milligram strength will simply result in not noticing benefits.

Here are the factors to be consider when selecting the right milligram strength.

Factor #1: Your Body’s Tolerance to Cannabinoids

The science behind how we process cannabinoids is a complex one. Largely this is because everybody’s metabolism is different. Thus, the effective amounts and outcomes of CBD vary distinctly from person to person. Some people find that low amounts of CBD deliver powerful effects. Others need to take high doses to feel anything at all.

If you’re totally new to hemp, then finding the right dose takes some experimentation. We always recommend titrating. This is a word that means starting with low doses and working up until desired results are met.

Factor #2: Type of Delivery Method

The delivery method refers to how compounds absorb into the body. Different delivery methods include ingestibles, inhalables, and topicals. Each delivery method has its own bioavailability, meaning that some methods absorb more efficiently into the body than others.

For instance, edibles are at the bottom of the bioavailability list because they are processed through the digestive system. Some of their CBD metabolizes rather than activating in the endocannabinoid system.  Meanwhile, topicals are highly bioavailable, binding to cannabinoid receptors in tissue quickly through absorption. This is why most of us achieve results with relatively low topical milligram amounts.

This explains why identical CBD amounts in different mediums can function differently.

Factor #3: Dosage Amount

Dosage refers to the actual amount of product you take, while milligram strength refers to how many milligrams of CBD are in each dose.

Example: Say you have a 1200mg CBD oil. This indicates that the entire bottle contains 1200mg of CBD. On average, one full dropper contains around 40mg. Conversely, a single drop is only 2mg. Now you can see the important distinction between dosage and total milligrams.

Standard Milligram Strengths of CBD, According to Delivery Method

As we touched upon earlier, each delivery method has different absorption rates. What this means is that each delivery method has a standard number of milligrams that are recommended per dose.  Essentially, these milligram strengths represent what is considered to be a moderate dosage.

Delivery Method #1: Edibles and Capsules

Edibles and capsules are both absorbed through the body’s digestive tract, which is why the dosage of capsules and edibles is usually similar. It is recommended that a person takes 10 to 25 milligrams per dosage. Conveniently, edibles and capsules typically contain an amount within this range per piece. This way, a single edible or capsule provides you with the suggested dosage amount.

Delivery Method #2: Tinctures

Tinctures come in a large variety of milligram strengths, with the most common being between 1000-1500mg per bottle. This comes to about 30-50 milligrams per dropper. These oils used to be common in 250mg per bottle amounts because raw hemp was so expensive. As hemp becomes cheaper to grow, more concentrations enter the market. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see concentrations of 3000mg per bottle.

Delivery Method #3: Topicals

Coming up with a standard milligram strength for topicals is a bit trickier. Different ingredients can alter how quick a topical absorbs. For one thing, there is no standard dosage amount with topicals, because there are a wider array of issues people use topicals for. It is hard to measure out a certain and precise amount of lotion, cream or oil with each application. Beyond Botanicals has simplified this problem with our creams and cooling gels. Each uses an airless pump that dispenses 10mg of CBD per squeeze.

Most topical formulas come in 500mg to 1500mg strengths. With this type of delivery method, you can choose a strength based on the effects you’d like to feel.

The Milligram Strength is Key to a Successful CBD Experience

The way in which you feel the effects of a CBD product has a lot to do with the milligram strength that you’ve chosen. Because all of us are taking hemp for our own personal reasons, some people may find that a much stronger product is necessary to give them the desired results, or that what is considered a standard dose for the majority is simply more than is necessary to achieve a particular goal.

While the suggested strengths listed above are a helpful guide for beginners, ultimately you can increase or decrease your dosage based on your particular needs.
